Jeff Watson Discusses His '17 King Of Dirt Series Season
4WIDE / JEFF WATSON - THE King of DIrt Series named Jeff Watson their 2017 Newcomer Of The Year Award winner for the 1-800-GOT-jUNK Sportsman Series tour Presented by Andy's Speed Shop, Dean's Electrical, and Dodson Construction.
JEFF ON TRAVELING WITH THE KOD SERIES :
“I liked traveling to new places and racing at different venues that if you went to on a normal race night you would have to start in the rear. Traveling with the KOD series allows us to be in control of our own destiny. If we time trial poorly, then most likely we will have our work cut out for us so I enjoyed the tour. It was the first time I had ever been apart of an entire tour before.”
JEFF ON WHAT HE LEARNED IN ‘17:
“I learned real quick that my every day set up program was not very good. We can roll into Lebanon Valley Speedway and be right up to speed, but for some reason we just could not make it work on the tour until we went to Charlotte. Right before Charlotte my father and I looked over the car and really figured something was very wrong with it. It was after the Fonda Race that we as a team decided that we had something wrong, so we took the entire car apart and found multiple things we did not assemble right. From the get go we were in trouble. We fixed everything on the car that was wrong, got a hold of Randy from Bicknell and got a set up and headed to Charlotte. That is where we found out we had a good car that handled very well. We did not have the results we wanted, but turned down very good lap times on Saturday in the LCQ which we won.
I would say this season I learned more than I have in any other season I have raced except my rookie year. We went to some challenging race tracks and each were challenging in their own way. Utica-Rome was very slick and hard to get any drive and Fonda ate up our tires which surprised us.
It was a tough year in general. We learned a lot and most of all we were very excited to go to each track whether if it was the ice rink of Utica- Rome or my old stomping grounds Lebanon Valley Speedway. We were always looking forward to the challenge. One of the best races I felt, outside of winning twice at the valley, was the crate nationals. That is a race I have wanted to run for a while and after winning the B we ended up in the top 10 at the end and at one point we were up to 6th I believe. It was a lot of fun and I wish there were more of the 100 lap races for us sportsman guys.”
“I want to thank my father for always pushing me to do the best we can. Johnny Schuman for being the main sponsor on the car, Matt Malita, Tom Reynolds, all my sponsors and my beautiful wife who does such a great job at taking care of our daughter Bristol and allowing me to chase this dream I have of driving race cars.”
