DIRTcar Track Spotlight: Brockville Ontario Speedway

DIRTCAR - CONCORD, NC - 2019 marks the fiftieth year of operation for The Bullring, Brockville Ontario Speedway. The Eastern Ontario DIRTcar sanctioned race track features Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship DIRTcar 358 Modifieds and DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds. The Loud & Dirty Northeast Fall Nationals October 18-19, 2019 serves as the Championship finale for three DIRTcar Northeast Series: 358 Modifieds, Sportsman Modifieds, and Pro Stocks. This unique, high-stakes event should be on every race fan’s calendar.

Last year Brockville’s DIRTcar 358 Modified Track Champion was the legendary veteran, Danny O’Brien. He and his No. 17D visited the BOS Victory Lane six times in 2018 en route to the Track Championship. Sadly for his fans, O’Brien is hanging up the helmet and will be a spectator. All eyes will be on Ryan Arbuthnot, Kyle Dingwall, and Luke Whitteker to carry the DIRTcar 358 Modified torch in 2019. Also, just announced, Mike Maresca, in his black and orange No. 7x, will race for the 358 Modified Championship at Brockville this year.

DIRTcar Sportsman Modified driver Ryan Scott showed speed and consistency wins Championships at The Bullring. He took home three checkered flags, while runner-up Johnathon Ferguson snagged four. It was an extremely tight battle all season as Tristan Draper rounded out the podium despite tallying three wins for himself. Draper is making the jump to the 358 Modified ranks this year, showing how well the DIRTcar Northeast ladder system works. 2019 promises another exceptional season of Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship DIRTcar Sportsman Modified action.

The most highly anticipated event at Brockville Ontario Speedway is the Loud & Dirty Northeast Fall Nationals, which takes place October 18-19, 2019. All four DIRTcar Northeast divisions will be coming off the excitement of NAPA Super DIRT Week XLVIII, and for the 358 Modifieds, Sportsman Modifieds, and Pro Stocks Brockville, it’s is the last race of the season as the Series Championships will be decided. On Friday, October 18, the Super DIRTcar Series headlines the show with their second to last race of the season, with the World Finals presented by CAN-AM hosting the final rounds of the season.

The DIRTcar 358 Series finale at Brockville on Saturday, October 19 is a $10,000 to win 100-lap Bullringer.

Making a trip for the races at Brockville Ontario Speedway is perfect family fun, and there is plenty to do and places to stay in the region. One of the most popular attractions is the Aquatarium, a 33,000+ square foot climate-controlled aquarium and discovery center on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. Another great stop is The National Air Force Museum of Canada. The museum has over thirty vintage aircraft on site, including the famous World War II fighter, the Hawker Hurricane.

Whether you are a long-time weekly fan of Brockville, or it’s your first time, there is plenty of DIRTcar action to look forward to in 2019!

SCHATZ DEFIES ODDS IN SIN CITY

WORLD OF OUTLAWS SPIRINT CARS - LAS VEGAS, NV – Feb. 28, 2019 – The final night of racing at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas was Donny Schatz’s to lose. He was hundredths of a second away from winning his Heat race, he won the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash, and he pulled away with the lead at the start of the Feature in front of thousands that came to see a historic night of racing that paired the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series with the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West.

But on lap 14 he lost it. Series points leader Daryn Pittman had inched closer and closer to Schatz every lap, eventually finding grip in the middle of the track and darting by him.

He stretched the lead of the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown presented Star Nursery between he and Schatz to about a straightaway’s length. Even with multiple cautions, and an Open Red, allowing teams to refuel their car, Pittman never fluttered, always knowing where to find grip on the rubbered down track, gradually moving from the top of the track at the beginning of the race to the bottom of the track by the end. The race was then his to lose.

And on the final lap of the race, he lost it. Blocked by a slower lap car – a situation Pittman used to his advantage to win his first race of the season – Schatz took advantage of a clear opening on the high side of the track to get his Tony Stewart Racing car back by Pittman and then held him off to claim a victory he thought he lost.

I didn’t think we’d get him (Pittman),” said 10-time Series Champion Schatz. “But we hit traffic on the last corner. He went there (low), and I was going the other place. It was either win it or wear it, and lucky we won it.
— DONNY SCHATZ

Lady Luck was good to Schatz. Not only did he find luck in lap traffic, he found luck in his tires holding on until the end of the 30-lap Feature, extended by multiple cautions – as his right rear tire could have been mistaken for a slick stock car tire by the end of the race. Pittman cited drivers’ fear of blowing a tire is why he caught lap traffic in five laps after a late race caution, leading to him losing the race.

We were lapping really good cars. The problem was everybody’s pace was off, because I think everybody was afraid of blowing tires. They were just going slower than I thought they would. Honestly if I could have replayed it, I probably would have just slowed down from the time we went green with five to go.
— DARYN PITTMAN

However, Pittman acknowledged he couldn’t slow down too much because Schatz “will blow his tire trying to win a race and not think twice about it.”

The victory is Schatz’s 13th win at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas and his 284th World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series victory. He went winless in the first three races of the season for the first time since 2013 – a stat he laughed off, but is glad to get past.

I went three races without a win. Holy hell, I’m glad we’re over that hump
— DONNY SCHATZ

Looking to spoil the Schatz and Pittman battle for the lead, which ended with a 0.071-sec. gap, was third place finisher Logan Schuchart. He quietly worked his way through the field, from 10th, getting to third by lap 13. He stalked the two Series champions throughout the race, staying close enough to pounce if one bobbled, but neither did.

I thought I might have a shot right there at the end with both of them. But these guys are World of Outlaws champions. They’re going to be tough to beat and they’re not going to make many mistakes
— LOGAN SCHUCHART

He too was worried about his tires at the end of the race, stating he slowed his pace a little to not blow one.

Tires plagued Cory Eliason’s night with his right rear tire blowing in the closing laps of the race, but he still managed to be the KSE Hard Charger for the second night in a row. He finished 13th after starting 24th.

While Schatz claimed the victory at the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown, Pittman remains the points leader – by just four points over Schatz.

World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series actions resumes March 8-9 at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA. As always, you can catch all the action on DIRTVision.com.

Historic wins

Donny Schatz’s last lap pass to claim his 284th win came on an historic night for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Car Series. For the first time, the World of Outlaws and the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West were paired together for a thrilling night of racing at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas.

I’m glad to see a lot of the NASCAR fans here. We met a lot of NASCAR people the last couple of days, people who have never seen a Sprint Car before. So hopefully it opens their eyes to new things.
— DONNY SCHATZ

It was an event that drew a crowd of thousands in the stands and attracted a wide range of media attention.

Echoing the heart-pounding finish to the World of Outlaws race, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West put on an equally exciting show, with rising NASCAR star Hailie Deegan making a last lap pass for the win in the 100-lap Star Nursery 100. While the 17-year-old is paving a bright future for herself in NASCAR, she couldn’t help but be drawn to the “gnarly” Sprint Cars.

It’s sick. At Volusia (Speedway Park) was the first time I saw Outlaw racing, and man, I wanted to get into a car so bad… I think coming out here with the Sprint Cars definitely made for a good show.

DIRTcar - CONCORD, NC - Brewerton Speedway is one of the jewels of the robust Central New York racing scene. The high-banked ⅓ mile D-Shaped Dirt Demon has played stage to some of the best DIRTcar Northeast in history. Whether it’s the Super DIRTcar Series and DIRTcar 358 Modified Series or the Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship Big-Block Modifieds and Sportsman Modifieds, the action is always at the highest level.

On Friday, September 13, the Super DIRTcar Series drops in for the fifth annual $7,500 to win Duel at the Demon 100. 2019 Super DIRTcar Series Champion Matt Sheppard squeezed by for a victory over Gypsum Racing’s No. 42P Pat Ward in last year’s Duel. Young gun Tim Sears Jr. thrilled the crowd with a podium finish. Also on the bill is the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified 50.

Perhaps Brewerton Speedway’s most famous race annual race comes on the Thursday of NAPA Super DIRT Week. Billy Whittaker Cars & Trux presents the 27th annual DIRTcar 358 Modified Series Hurricane 100. The Hurricane 100 is a staple on the NAPA Super DIRT Week satellite event schedule and many call it the best of the race of the week. This year’s Hurricane 100 is on Thursday, October 10.

Massive fields of DIRTcar Sportsman Series racers swarm the Brewerton Speedway pit area every year for the Hurricane 30 as well. They put on a tremendous show for NAPA Super DIRT Week attendees. In 2018 Dave Marcuccilli from Cayuga, NY was victorious over 2018 DRIVEN World Short Track Championship Feature winner Jackson Gill, and Bob Henry Jr. Forty-six DIRTcar Sportsman entered the Hurricane 30 in 2018 there would easily be more in 2019.

The 2018 Brewerton Speedway Big-Block Modified Track Champion was HBR Motorsports’ Baldwinsville Bandit Jimmy Phelps. He beat Larry Wight and Max McLaughlin for the title by only two points. Needless to say, the Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship brings star power to Brewerton, NY on Friday nights. The DIRTcar Sportsman fields are so strong at Brewerton, that they often run two to three Features with full purses.

This year The Franklyn Flyer Billy Decker has returned to the Gypsum Express No. 91. In addition to racing full-time on the Super DIRTcar Series, Decker will race weekly at Brewerton Speedway.

For fans who want to make a weekend trip of it, Brewerton Speedway races every Friday night, and sister track Fulton Speedway takes Saturdays. We’ll spotlight Fulton in the near future, but it’s important to note that making the trip to see both tracks is a slam dunk for dirt racing fans in the Northeast. DIRTcar has you covered at night, but there is plenty to do in the area during the day as well.

Central New York is ripe with family-friendly attractions. Visiting race fans can find one of the country’s largest malls, Destiny USA, which includes RPM Speedway, an indoor electric go-kart track. Other area draws include Onondaga Lake Park for nature-lovers, the Central Square Railroad Museum and Historical Society for the curious, and the Full Boar Craft Brewery & Tap Room for the thirsty.
